About AIFirsts

AIFirsts is a researched publication covering major firsts, milestones, companies and developments in artificial intelligence. It exists because "who did it first" questions are asked constantly, and the answers found online are often thin, undated or wrong.

How the articles are written

Each article opens with a direct answer to the question in its title, followed by a key-facts table. The body then works through the history in question-and-answer sections, so that a reader, or a search engine or language model, can find the specific point they need without reading the whole piece. Every article ends with a list of primary sources.

The articles distinguish between three kinds of claim: independently verified facts, claims made by a company or individual about their own work, and interpretations. Where a "first" is asserted by an interested party, the article says so and sets out what the independent record does and does not confirm.

Who writes it

AIFirsts is an independent publication. Articles are researched and written by the AIFirsts editorial team from primary sources: contemporary press coverage, company records, academic publications, archives and the published work of the people involved. Articles are not commissioned or paid for by their subjects.

Corrections

The series aims to be accurate and fully sourced. Corrections, additional primary sources and challenges to any "first" claimed here are welcome and will be reviewed and, where warranted, reflected in the article with a note of the change. Write to editorial@aifirsts.com.
